Virginia Tech's Center for Geospatial Information Technology development of a
statewide GIS-based decision support database for Virginia's bikeway
and pedestrian infrastructure is well underway, with delivery scheduled
in late September.

DCR is working on a set of maps for a "Trails Visioning" session at this
year's Governor's Conference on Greenways and Trails, held in Richmond
in early October. We are planning to use the data Tech has developed,
along with other critical GIS layers, to plan linkages between existing
trail systems within the statewide trails network.

Some of the other layers needed, as identified by our mapping
subcommittee, are campgrounds or other lodging, utility lines
(gas, electric, and water lines--particularly segments that may be owned
in fee simple) and any shapefiles that exist for outdoor adventure
destinations (public or private areas for caving, rock climbing,
fishing, horseback riding, bicycling, off-road cycling, ATV-riding,
canoeing, kayaking) or the outfitters that support these industries. It
would also be helpful to have information on restaurants or other
food-service vendors, and any restroom facilities that would be
available for public use.

I have attached the goals of the statewide trail planning initiative, in
case there is other data out there that we should consider during the
mapping exercise.

Anyone on this listserv who knows how to acquire any of the above-mentioned
data, please respond to jennifer.wampler@dcr.virginia.gov
